Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@kay19 Not sure, they’re changing atm as I’m coming out of contest prep and on a new program trying to grow with more arm volume

    @akguy Fabulous, then carry on!

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@akguy Sounds solid, real proof is in the pudding. Are you making progress? If yes, then yes :-)

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@livingme7 Don’t know. Eventually we’ll get to a point where we might be able to screen/predict who responds better to low vs high volumes. But I will say everyone can make progress with 1 set…initially. The question is how much can they get out of it. Most people in my experience will plateau...

@kerrysue You got it! Best of luck!

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@kerrysue Just as a reminder I have a PhD in sports science and a masters in nutrition and a masters in exercise science. I’m not a DPT or orthopaedic surgeon. So this is out of my scope. I’d advise reaching out to the team 3DMJ DPT Nick Licameli for better qualified advice. That said, I am...

@hayleyvdr Consistency in meal patterns, so that it’s a habit each day, not something that requires a lot of mental energy, very much not discussed ime.

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@jgeral0172 Ok, first I’d like to take a moment to shill for MASS. Of course not everyone might want to subscribe to get all our content, and might not think it’s worth it, but given the breadth and topics in your interest, I’m confident you would, as we literally have double digit numbers of...

@jameseverett591 Yes, but not measurably at the population level until ~60

@lcapitan 2024 at some point when I finish them, probably later vs earlier

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@treegreentrey Most of the data on higher volume training being associated with greater muscle growth is not out of Schoenfeld’s lab. If you wanted, for some reason, to throw that all out, the relationship would still be observable. And I’ll quote a recent post I made: “You can identify a bias...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@judithwiegand It’s kind of not really a style of training imo, it’s letting training emerge from your needs and what you individually respond to, without putting arbitrary limits on what muscles you train on any given day. It’s what we call “inside out programming.” So you establish the...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@fateeadams I don’t think for hypertrophy it matters too much, tbh. It’s moreso ensuring that the total stimulus stays sufficient to produce growth, regardless of whether or not load increases faster or slower. So if the volume is appropriate and the RIR is as well, they are all viable pathways...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@cuth6et Good way to think of this: “is there sufficient overload to grow?” That encompasses more than just proximity to failure, so you also need to think about other variables. Primarily, how much total work am I doing (volume), and what vehicles (exercises) am I using to deliver the overload...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@sisi I think there’s an argument for training across the 4+ rep range spectrum up to 20-30 reps or so, primarily pairing appropriate rep ranges with appropriate exercises. For example RIR at higher loads doesn’t really matter for stimulus and somewhere around 4-5 reps is where a hard set...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@ecclossians Theories are great, as they are meant to be tested, they go hand in hand with empirical data. Theories should be updated to align with empirical data. Regarding lengthened partials I’d be totally fine with anyone who is a bit skeptical regarding their efficiency over full ROM...

Question thread for our AMA with Eric Helms of 3DMJ!

@ashleylovesjesus I think the only issue is that it’s hard to know how to autoregulate volume. I don’t have confidence in any system I’ve seen that it produces ideal volume on a given session based on biofeedback or any auto regulated method I can think of. Ultimately determining ideal volume...
