Almost 40 -- Struggling with gains & recovery. Advice needed, please

@plavious Same boat. Problem is, when I have the time and feel good I overdo it, then need more time to recover....and tend to eat more poorly when feeling beat down and tired. But still, we're doing it and we're in better shape than the vast majority of our peers. (right?)

Does this 3-day 5/3/1 BBB w/ accessories make sense?

@gem4him I always thought you were supposed to do accessories that were different from the main lifts? Not more of the same. That much volume (5x10s) after doing your 5/3/1 lift is probably unsustainable. Especially when doubling main lifts in a session. That's a lot to recover from.

    Any soccer referees here?

@gregoryabby16 C25K got my fat ass started when my kids started Girls On The Run. Which led to three 5Ks which is funny because I don't enjoy running. But it opened the door to other kinds of training which I enjoy more and I'm in much better shape because of it. Good luck and get after it!

@snippy I didn’t really answer your question. A lot of guys go two times a week, get good training in and progress steadily. More is better but you do what you can.

34M - multiple injuries and getting back on the wagon - 5/3/1 or 8/6/3?

@snippy Depends if you’ve wrestled or grappled before, but pretty steep. Which is also what makes it gratifying. Whatever ego you have will be destroyed on the regular. On average I train twice a week but also strength train, do yoga and whenever possible, hit an open mat too.

34M - multiple injuries and getting back on the wagon - 5/3/1 or 8/6/3?

@markusdrury I (49m) switched off 531 when I started training jujitsu. Pushing for PR‘s was too much and exacerbated minor strains and injuries. I’m now on a higher rep, lower weight program. Goal is to build more muscle around my joints and tbh, aesthetics. TL/DR - higher reps lower weight...
