48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@savedbygracethrufaith I'd love to say I at least put on a tan over that time, but alas, it's just a change in lighting.

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@dawn16 Yeah, diet would help trim things up. I’m lifting as heavy as I can, though.

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@andrewm12 Thanks for the advice. I did stick with each of the programs listed for at least one or two full cycles, but maybe I just need to find something good and stick with it for a half year or more? I watch a lot of form videos and pay attention to my technique, but no, I don't video my...

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@pcadummy Sorry, I should have clarified. Those 1RMs are actually estimated 1RMs, calculated from sets of max reps of 4-8.

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@ca614 Thank you. That's what I found with 5/3/1 and a couple other programs I tried. They were focused more on strength than hypertrophy. Lately I've been trying to find something else. I'll check out Dr. Mike.

@itrm I’d lifted in the past, but this was my first time really lifting for at least a decade or so. I do some mountain biking each week, too. 1RM changes: Bench from 165 to 200 OHP from 105 to 135 Squat from 235 to 275 Dead from 295 to 360

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@cleebrin I like that "just a bit less" idea. I tried something similar before -- eating the same stuff I usually eat, but cutting portions in half. Just a bit less sounds more sustainable.

@paulotarsus Is that kg of actual body weight, ideal body weight, or lean mass?

@ash777 Typically, one or two nights a week. Two to four beers each time, tops.

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

@producer1 You’re right. I tried tracking calories and couldn’t keep it up. I like to cook and eat a variety of types of meals, so it got to be a lot of fiddly work I didn’t like. I do make a point of getting a good amount of protein in each meal, but I could do better for sure.

48M kind of disappointed in 2-years' gym progress. Maybe I need some help

So this is me (48 years old) before and after a little over two years of weightlifting at the gym. First off, I love going to the gym. I don't have a problem with motivation. 4, sometimes 5 days a week, I go in for 90 minutes or so, and I put in real work when I'm there. I don't just F around...

Should I eat 60g of protein or 259g?

In a recent advice thread here on building muscle, I got a wide variety of recommendations on how much protein I should be eating. Looking for more clarification, I went off to the wider web and found even more variation (even when sticking to reputable health and fitness sites). I’ve seen...
