My completely subjective experience with, and advice for, starting a strength training program (as an absolute beginner)

@wintermint That does seem really useful! I don’t live in the US, so I’m not sure if there are any CrossFit gyms around me— but, either way, glad they have that training! I wish my gym had something like that, because I was a total noob!

@lewisofthenorth I didn’t know that! Thanks! Maybe when the weights get heavier, and grip becomes a real consideration, I will exclusively use it. Thanks for the hot tip!

@jake2847 I’m glad it helped! I don’t know if it’s the “official” way to learn how to do barbell stuff (like I said, I am a total beginner and was making it up as I go), but one thing that also might help: you gym might have multiple barbells (of different weights). My gym has 2 standard 20kg...

@skilletboy It’s Personal Training Coach. There is even a subreddit for it: r/personaltrainingcoach - hope it helps! It’s free to start, and a $15 in-app purchase upgrade, which I gladly paid for!

My completely subjective experience with, and advice for, starting a strength training program (as an absolute beginner)

@nishan I’m definitely going to stick with my current routine until the end of September. In October I might try out a new one, but for now, even if it isn’t the most perfect and ideal lifting program for a beginner, I want to keep sticking to it, just to cement the habit of lifting 3 times a...

@jordangeneration I looked up my sedentary maintenance calories for the weight I want to be, and I generally stick to that number plus 100-200 calories on days I am really hungry. I also try to prioritize protein: I aim for 25% of my daily calories to be from protein.

@metalgrand That really was the key for me too. It really helped me narrow down the nebulous category of “learn about fitness” to “learn about these specific exercises,” which made it feel manageable, and like I could actually start. And, just as you said, the program doesn’t have to be...

My completely subjective experience with, and advice for, starting a strength training program (as an absolute beginner)

@thesun1122 You’re really welcome. And, also, in the spirit of “just pick something and start,” you can do almost all of the recommended routine over at r/bodyweightfitness without a gym (I think there are a few exercises that use cables, but you can use resistance bands, or just skip those...

@groggit Thank you so much for your kind words! And yeah, 6 days a week was a lot to start with, so I definitely believe in “something is better than nothing.” Starting with 3 days a week seemed do-able, and I am really happy that I’ve been able to stick with that— there is plenty of time to add...

@cekoen I understand, but believe me when I say it is totally doable! You got this!!

@godisgreat_77 Thank you so much for this comment. It just hit me, after reading what you wrote, that I AM really excited. I have been working on losing weight for a just a little over 2 years at this point, so I know that change and progress takes time. But, on the flip side, I also know that...

My completely subjective experience with, and advice for, starting a strength training program (as an absolute beginner)

@ccscott61 I won’t lie, deadlifts make me the most nervous! I am still very cautious with them- I would rather do 15 reps of a lower weight than try for a 5 reps of a higher weight. A video from Athlean-X really helped me understand the movement (understanding that the first part is like a leg...

@loraine Absolutely, picking something was somehow harder than sitting down to learn the exercises. I’m glad you’re doing something that works for you!

@gonzalio Wow, thanks so much. Honestly, this comment means so much to me! I considered Stronglifts 5x5 (as well as ice cream fitness novice plan, and GZCLP, and Ivysaur’s 4-4-8, and everything else I read about on here) but, as I said, I just picked SOMETHING, and committed to learning my first...
