Sheffield Powerlifing 2023: Preview and discussion post

@ronit Based on planned openers, looks like Agata is going all in on the bench WR and not much else. And Karlina is out for blood 😮

Sheffield Powerlifing 2023: Preview and discussion post

@ronit I have a hard time picking against Jess too, since she is so experienced with international competition, travel, and performing under pressure. And since deadlift is her best lift she'll have the opportunity to at least try to pull whatever she needs to win. So I think I have to keep...

    SBTD Questions

@elijahtocome I don’t have a SBTD specific advice but it is not true that it’s inherently bad to work the same muscle group on consecutive days.

Dr. Mike on male/female training differences

@lift4christ I know the YouTube algorithm favors those kinds of titles but imo that does not make it exempt from criticism. It’s no different than a newspaper using a misleading headline.

Dr. Mike on male/female training differences

@patsy_cline_fan I hate the clickbait title. We know, empirically from a lot of science and also a wealth if anecdotal evidence, that men and women absolutely can use identical training protocols and make very similar progress, in terms of % gain in lean mass. We also know that where there...

    Does body recomposition actually work?

@catholic500 hi, zombie thread :-) Re: gaining muscle on a calorie deficit. Here is a recent summary of the scientific evidence. Gaining muscle in a deficit is possible but slower than if you are not in a deficit, and the bigger the deficit, the harder it is.

    Deadlift form check

@otherfish Not bad! Focus on “packing your lats” (think about tucking your lats down into your back pocket, or squeezing oranges between your armpits). I also think you may have overcorrected a bit - you have a lot of knee bend, and it’s getting in the way of your bar path (see how the bar...

Sheffield Powerlifing 2023: Preview and discussion post

Edit: Scoreboard link What is Sheffield 2023? Sheffield is a powerlifting meet hosted by SBD Apparel in the town of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It is also the reason many of your favorite powerlifters didn’t compete in their respective National Championships earlier this month...

    Does body recomposition actually work?

@_marc97 Sure. But it works slowly. It’s not the choice you should make if you want big changes in six months. Personally I start noticing subtle visual changes at about 4 months when I recomp, but my measurements aren’t usually wildly different at that point (very much within the “where exactly...

Newbie question: why does 'to failure' feel different for different muscles?

@pakalolo For me personally, I don’t love this for compounds since what muscles you “feel” doing the work isn’t necessarily reflective of reality. In regular training I usually treat “failure” compound sets as 1-2 RIR sets and use bar speed/grind to assess how close I am to failure (and every...

Newbie question: why does 'to failure' feel different for different muscles?

@maggie123 Hmm, I’m not sure this works as a blanket statement. If you are so focused on good form that you lift well below your ability, you’ll likely see slower/fewer gains. What “perfect form” is also has some nuance to it. For a strength, the best form in their competition lifts is whatever...

    Partners gym Progress Dissatisfaction

@nextstep First, I would not overly fixate on the results from those scans: Body composition estimates are less useful than you think. (DEXA is used as the example here because it is the best commercial method for measuring body comp, other methods generally have even higher errors). Are his...

New Year’s Resolution & 2024 Fitness Goals Megathread

@chrissy I second @dhilawinslate-for-life-1984. Especially since compliments are kind of a gym etiquette gray zone - a lot of people wouldn’t do it because they don’t want to be seen as rude.

How do you pump yourself up to go hard?

@allthingsarebecomenew Yeah a program that doesn’t give you a clear guide on weight is probably not good. For me, I am currently running vanilla GZCL. Weights are based off of percentages of a training max, here defined as approximately a 2-3 RM. I haven’t done proper max testing in awhile but...
