Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@maryjosephine Yes, no animals were used in the production process. And it undercuts the factory farming industry. So, very vegan, imo. For some reason, some people think that "veganism" means an aversion to anything that isn't plant based.

Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@sicjoy Whey doesn't cause cancer. Red meat is a group 2A carcinogen, though. If cell cultured red meat keeps someone from eating a cow then I don't care if it's a carcinogen. People make choices.

Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@elliee Right, the transgenic fungus is only producing beta-lactoglobulin and not the fats. Great find, btw, I saved it.

Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@elliee There is no lingering flavor. Maybe because it is just the whey isolate which in this case is only beta lactoglobulin. The vanilla sundae flavor tasted creamy and delicious. Zero complaints. Note conventional whey that hasn't had the non-proteins removed has like 8 different kinds of...

Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@elliee No, so I don't have a reference point, unfortunately. But keep in mind it's molecularly identical to animal whey isolate so there is no way that it could be actually be different in taste. But that won't stop the dairy farmer shills from making shit up. You know they will.

Could use some protein-per-pound advice, please

@chazy123 The USDA calculator is pretty good https://www.nal.usda.gov/human-nutrition-and-food-safety/dri-calculator Take the estimated daily caloric needs number that it gives you and subtract 500 and with that level of daily calorie intake you would drop about 1 lb of fat per week, give or take.

Could use some protein-per-pound advice, please

@chazy123 American College of Sports Medicine says people who lift weights should get between .5 and .8 grams protein per pound https://www.acsm.org/docs/default-source/files-for-resource-library/protein-intake-for-optimal-muscle-maintenance.pdf So for you that is about 116 g at the higher...

Animal-free whey protein is on the market now!

@raef Thank you. People aren't looking at the big picture, imo. Proteins made by fermentation have the potential to destroy the meat and dairy industry. It's that simple. I understand people are afraid of new tech, but this is truly an important development. We are never going to get 100% of...

Why Ketogenic/low-carb diets make no sense for athletic performance

@konsacz Yeah, I wonder that too. Some people need empathy, imo. But maybe that's asking a lot.

Why Ketogenic/low-carb diets make no sense for athletic performance

@konsacz I hear you. I have diabetics in my family. In another sub I mod someone started chastising the vegans there who used artificial sweeteners and I thought to myself, I would never, ever tell someone with diabetes or other blood sugar issue that they their diet is bad because they use...

@tripp1523 They are affordable (60 cents per serving)

Why Ketogenic/low-carb diets make no sense for athletic performance

@sunrise628 Low carb is not the same thing as keto. Low carb is 100 to 150 net carbs per day. Low carb does not lead to ketosis. One can eat higher carb for athletic performance and then lower carb for the rest of the day. For many people one type of diet does not fit all situations for the...

Working on Silk Protein Nut Milk replacement

@prettythings I just got it the other day. It's has a nice flavor (like cashews, basically) and mixes pretty well with the milk. It's a little expensive though for the amount of protein in it, so I'm trying to figure out way to use it in small quantities. Maybe for sauces. Not sure yet.
