The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost I think VO2max is per kg bodyweight, the problem is the burpee-based estimates could be unreliable for bodyweights/heights outside the range of the Japanese college students that took part in that study! If you can find a cycle or rowing ergometer with a reliable power meter...

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost The core strength from grappling might have you covered for burpees, esp if your deep squat ROM is good. I can squat hams to calves until my legs go numb, & my core strength is reasonable (eg I can hold an L-sit) but I've been prone to lumbar pain recently, so I'm mostly...

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost Well the research subjects weren't huge.... They're just another option, but pretty versatile. Some people find they cause lower back pain tho, so take care :)

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost Probably above 75th; this method likely underestimates for larger, heavier people...

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost They're not hard limits, but the research subjects (Japanese students) were mostly quite small/slight. idk what's wrong with that link, but if you google 'v02ma ranker' you'll find some alternatives.

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@myfaithislost You could just trace up from 52 on the chart (Fig 4) to get a VO2max estimate on the vertical axis, then use a VO2max ranker. But it may not be v accurate if you're over about 1.75m tall or ~70kg (see 'edit' in OP).

    Kettlebells made out of . . . (?)

@madbird This is it! (+ another coating to avoid lead poisoning.)

    Kettlebells made out of . . . (?)

@madbird The jump between lead and uranium would be a bit hard to handle (and the gold bell would cost about $2m in materials :)

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@ctay6318 And she hasn't scanned it and put it online. smh

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@nicogarzanderson tbh for training purposes any kind should do; for testing it's the 4-count burpee described in the paper.

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@nicogarzanderson The formula on Figure 4; 36 is just the intercept of the regression line.

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

@ben19 Yeah, the equation on Fig 4 gets you a ballpark estimate of (the YoYo IRT estimate of) VO2max. But note the burpee style (no pushup or jump, just a squat thrust with an overhead clap) &: >The 3MBT was performed with particular attention to correct posture, rather than aiming for speed of...

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

    @discombobulated1 Valid observation; almost the opposite case holds under 45 burpees. I hope this gets redone with a larger sample. *w/h2 = bmi, => h = sqr(w/bmi) = sqrt(61.5/21.95)

Nerd Math - the Mark of the Wildman (The 'Missing Playlist' for Mark Wildman's "Nerd Math" Kettlebell Programming)

@ashvinne I think it's partly because he's explained the same (or very similar) things so many times. On the + side, his explanations are clear. (But they're also quite repetitive.)

The 3-Minute Burpee Test: A Minimalistic Alternative to the Conventional Estimated Oxygen Uptake [VO2max] Test

Full text. Researchers found a ~0.8 correlation between a max burpees* performed in 3 mins ('3 min burpee test'/3MBT) and VO2max estimated using the 'Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test' (a running-based procedure) in 127 recreationally trained young men**. Practicing burpees should improve 3MBT...

    Burpee Variations for Beginners

This video includes a fairly systematic progression of 7 variations that should should make building up towards full burpees more accessible for many older/deconditioned people: 1 Elevated plank walkout 2 Elevated plank jumpout 3 Elevated plank jumpout + pushup (= Elevated 6-count...

The Big Five Workout (Kettlebell Variant)

@pinkpeony Sure, but going from 16 to 24kg, that might change from 90s to 5s, and you're only supposed to do one set...
