Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@dawn16 This isn’t even a viable argument. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I won’t even both to explain the differences in movements to you.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@oddrob You just compared oranges to bananas my man. You make a great point but I feel like you’re picking apart more of my word usage than anything. Plus people oftentimes never see someone sustaining one of these injuries but working in multiple physical therapy clinics over the years I can...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@oxo Not just for your neck but also your brain in general. Plus some people need some elaboration on stuff like that. I’m happy to oblige where I can.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@oxo You aren’t hitting your head on the bar for a push press. You are guaranteed 1 head impact per rep when doing HSPU and adding the kip increases the downward acceleration onto your head, creating a high impact exercise. Push press are also high impact but it is different because your head...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

I don’t really hold every kipping movement in the same esteem.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@guidinglight Yes the case can be made but I believe kipping our handstand push ups was where I draw the line because receiving a slap tear from a kipping pull up is different from collapsing an entire segment of your spine into the ground.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@mayesh Those are both fantastic ways to manage the impact. Simply coming down slower will produce a better exercise with less impact at the bottom. When someone is unable to do a significant number of HSPU this is when the coach needs to step in to ask the athlete to scale. There are great HSPU...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@dawn16 Alright I reworded it. I hope it makes more sense to you but if not I’m sorry bud just think on it.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@dawn16 No problem let me give it a go.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@dawn16 I don’t have any delusions that everyone agrees with me. It’s why I ask for the disagreements. I have had some good arguments but nobody has had a counter I find fully convincing. While snatching and running can definitely bear risks, the risk to reward comparison in kipping handstand...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@dawn16 We went from working out smart and hard af to banging our heads on the floor and charging $1,000 for a 2-day intro program for coaching.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@garrettholliman2001 I love you so fuckin much right now, man. I’m reading right next to the girl who encouraged me to become a coach years ago and we are both reading your post, nodding our heads. It’s true! We have gone from being health freaks to self-destructive macho man Randy Savages. We...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@steve8524 You’re a man for admitting that buddy. I just don’t think the reward they offer is greater than the risk provided. Plus a lot of people hide those “small” injuries like kinks in their neck.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@emilysmith It is! But it’s when you realize this that you begin to compare the risk to reward for each movement.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@emilysmith I like them because this is controlled and you aren’t repeatedly touching the ground with your head. The impact is very low. Plus being inverted occasionally is great for circulation.

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@designer1985 If you put your knees on a box (for your height I’d say 20/24in box) and walk your hands close to the box with your butt in the air you can do pseudo-HSPU like that. The big difference is that your lower body weight is supported by the box and your hands hold up your upper body...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@littleunknown I can see your case for it and yes a lot of people probably shouldn’t do it. As for kipping pull ups I have no beef with them though. I’ve seen more issues caused with the HSPU than pull ups but knock on wood! As coaches and educated athletes we need to teach people when to kip...

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@remiirekiigbe Good call man and I love Josh Bridges but I also love HSPU but only the strict ones. I find it to be a highly rewarding exercise when performed correctly so I keep it. Therefore I will keep them but only to be used once a week or so and under control.

@olaomole2000 Amen I need to edit my post. Haha!

Please don’t kip in your handstand push ups

@christtubot I believe part of it is the high activation of your upper trapezius but I’m happy you made that decision man. It speaks highly of your lack of ego.
