Puny person in upstairs apartment adding barbell to routine

@shemystique I don't have a garage but I do have a room in my apartment already dedicated to being my home gym. Just wondering what additional equipment is feasible or best to add to what I'm already using.

@shemystique I wish I had a garage area! Maybe in a few years I'll move and find a place with one.

@lena27 No, it’ll be home or nothing for various reasons.

@hidden_one Thank you! That does look extremely sturdy and seems to be adjustable on the width even, maybe. I see it here for $357 - https://yorkbarbell.com/product/pro-series-204-barbell-support/ I'll definitely consider this!

@ahiah1 Thanks for confirming! Even though I’ve made decent recent progress with dumbbells, I’ve always had trouble building strength and not just plateauing at a low level so anything that makes it easier to keep incrementally progressing sounds like a good route to me.

@shemystique No worries, nothing is rained on. I know I can get stronger with dumbbells but they still seem more limiting than a barbell. I have the space (albeit within an apartment), money, and find the idea of a barbell fun. With a dumbbell bench press I can do 19.5 to 22 lbs (each hand) x...

Puny person in upstairs apartment adding barbell to routine

@shemystique A few reasons. 1, I already have the barbell and a few plates, and I find it fun. 2, while I'm not expecting to lift heavy by any weightlifting standards, I AM trying to get stronger and more muscular. I just have muted expectations and want to emphasize that I'm not necessarily...

@shemystique Bench and squat. I wouldn't mind a pullup bar, but I do have one mounted in a doorway already. The doorway pullup bar is lower than a squat cage bar might be, but that's more of a bonus feature. I've considered a pulley or something to add on later as a pull-down attachment, but...

@anon103 Appreciate the thoughts! Leaning towards the cheap cage setup because I like the simplicity of the design and the idea of it catching the bar no matter how I might fuck up.

@anon103 Yes, that's the link I meant to include, thank you. The spotter arms on the other one do feel a little useless (I bought them already to see for myself but am leaning towards returning and not getting the rack they're for.) Even for my small lifts, but again...I don't know much. So...

@nicole17 Yeah that all sounds pretty awesome. The versatility and simplicity of a simple full cage is appealing. I have a doorway pullup bar and would love to have something higher up (as a lifting cage bar would be) since it gets a little annoying holding my legs up as much as I have to do in...

Puny person in upstairs apartment adding barbell to routine

@seekingbutnotfinding I've already got a room I'm working out in. I'm just asking about equipment to add to it. It's extremely efficient for me to walk 10 feet into my home gym :)

@winlifeoc Hell yeah, you get it! I seriously love my home gym. I’m really excited now to get the barbell incorporated! Appreciate all your thoughts : )

@winlifeoc Thank you so much! I’m feeling more confident about just going for that simple full cage. I think it will give me a lot more peace of mind with safety and the footprint is still basically the same as the others anyway.

Puny person in upstairs apartment adding barbell to routine

I live in an older 1920s apartment building, and I'm on the 2nd floor. I've been working out with dumbbells and a flat bench on a glorified yoga mat, but am moving on to incorporating a barbell into my routine. I usually work out when my downstairs neighbors aren't home and only in non-quiet...
