My first DEXA scan results with photos! [28F/5'2''/108 lbs/27.3% body fat]

@dawn16 Yeah I know :( This particular pattern has been well-supported in research

My first DEXA scan results with photos! [28F/5'2''/108 lbs/27.3% body fat]

@kreelolwut That's true, but I have yet to see DEXA verified photos on Reddit from a woman with a body fat % lower than 26.8%. I found this picture of a woman who supposedly has a 19.4% DEXA body fat reading and she looks fatless. I think visceral fat usually doesn't look very good either (beer...

@dawn16 Yeah everyone bases their estimates on that particular set of images so they all underestimate. I read that it's very typical to get a DEXA reading of 5% more than what you would think from visuals and calipers because what you see (and can pinch) is just subcutaneous (not visceral) fat...

@leolion I agree with gr8grafx. The BMI calculator that it links to is off, and there's no way you can approximate body fat % from just someone's age, gender, and BMI. Either way, based on their calculations I got 24.4%. I think that the info (body fat pics, body fat calculators) on healthiack...

My first DEXA scan results with photos! [28F/5'2''/108 lbs/27.3% body fat]

@dawn16 I bought a bunch of personal training sessions to learn weightlifting in hopes that it would help my form. Unfortunately that didn't work for me even though I started light, so I am currently limiting myself to lower body work for weights, while working out the upper body with bodyweight...

@raika Yes it's pain. But it may have actually been due to a really intense bouldering session, and maybe irritated and perpetuated by weight-lifting in bad form.

@arisemydarling I agree that this is more important. The personal trainer who did the caliper test on me told me it would be benefit me to gain 10 lbs of muscle. Unfortunately weight-lifting and/or bouldering gave me pain in the neck and traps so I've had to lighten it up to recover.

@thedwarf Yeah it is a bit scary but I think for most of us it should be sufficient to exercise regularly, eat healthy, and get regular physicals (which give you glucose readings).

@designcitygirl I don't think one even has to feel like Jell-o to get 27% body fat (I can assure you that I don't!). I think that 27% is not actually that high (according to the reading its 20-40th percentile).

@ysman Oh I don't think it can be compared, I just mentioned it since I had an experience with it. I was only 15 when I did the hydrostatic weighing and now I'm 28.

@3john3 Hmm I don't know, a couple other women on Reddit (example 1,example 2) who had DEXA scans also scored around 27% bodyfat and I don't think I look less fat than them.

@ademide To be honest I've always had thin calves. I actually wish mine were less thin because it's near impossible to find boots that fit me...they all sag.

@ademide Btw these are my calves now and at 10-15 lbs heavier back in high school

@ademide Np, my calves: 12.5 inches. Thighs: 20 inches. Hope this helps!

@ademide You're welcome! Once I used one of those Omron handheld fat analyzers at the gym...and it told me I was 13.5%!

@numenorian No worries. It's true we all hold fat differently! Many of my friends think I'm strong/fit. However I can say that when I was heavier (and I'm assuming, fatter) it does show...so it's not like I always look lean either :)

@numenorian It sounds like the DEXA would be enlightening for you. My boyfriend also got a DEXA and scored 27% and does not look fat, so I just feel in general that DEXA yields higher scores than what people expect both visually and based on other body fat measurement methods.
