I think this year has been very exciting, and is unique within the sporting landscape. Yes, it can be silly upon first glance (whatsa box jump and why so many?) but once any sports fan sees the competitive part of it, it all clicks. So, Question:
What other sport is
1) individual (not team v team or 1 v 1)
2) judged, but layman can see results clearly
3) hard to do, but looks like you could do it
4) doesn’t have home field or preferred surface advantages a la tennis
5) cult-y, but accessible
6) lifetime general participation as an activity
7) odd scoring systems kinda necessary to pick a winner
I would like to know other sports out there are exciting to watch, but the two other sports are Track and Field, esp Decathalon, and figure skating.
Everyone is so into those two sports every four years. T&F is obviously much more objective than skating, (first to the line wins!) and figure skating is an amazing mix of elite individual athleticism, personal performative effort in front of a deeply knowledgeable crowd.
That’s it: Track and Field, Figure Skating, and the CrossFit Games.
I think that’s why The Games can be so exciting in ways other sports aren’t or can’t.
What else?
