What made you change your PT? (Sign ko na ba ito)

Hi medyo lurker ako for a while and will need advice.

I started working out recently sa AF and got myself a personal trainer for reasons na kailangan ko ng motivation to get back in shape. I gained a lot since the pandemic.

I have had some experience but since I want to grow stronger and be more disciplined kaya eto. Also medyo shy din ako makipagusap sa gym to make sure na tama ung proper way to do things sa gym kaya din ako naghire (huhu don't judge)

I was assigned to a male PT. First few sessions ok naman sya medyo masales talk pero ok naman sya kausap kaya I decided to avail X # of sessions (note fully paid). Also consistent din sya to remind me of my next sessions (like magttext in advance).

But recently medyo nagiisip ako whether dapat ba mag palit ng coach but eto ung mga recent napapansin ko na red flags (?)
  1. Medyo social butterfly ang kuya mo. Kapag may kakilala sya sa club or may coaches na tumatambay while I'm working out of the time lagi sya nakikipagusap. While inevitable kasi madami naman talaga tao sa gym, Super ilang ako kasi ayoko masyado tumatambay sa area for no reason while nagwworkout
  2. He's always on his phone (hindi ko alam kung bakit)
  3. Minsan takes photos while I'm doing my workout (medyo naiilang ako talaga dito - napapisip nalang ako na sana hindi ako kasama sa frame)
  4. Bihira icorrect ung form ko - while may onti idea ako how to do the workouts but form talaga ung iniisip ko because of injuries and hindi ko alam if san ba dapat tumatama ung exercise sa katawan ko
  5. Related sa 4, he keeps asking me if I'm sore (dapat daw oo? But most of the time hindi since - ayun nga hindi ko alam if tama ba ung form or hindi lang progressive ung workout ko?)
  6. Minsan overkill ung sessions namin umaabot ng 2 to 3 hrs (hindi ko alam kung ano ung normal na PT session) for 4 days - minsan ung sched nya kailangan tumugma dun kung saan ung days most of his clients are working out.
  7. 20 mins cardio?
Somehow naman nagreap ung consistency ng pagwworkout ko (feeling ko medyo stronger ako and mas ok ung feeling sa katawan) but gusto ko din mafeel na worth it ung bayad ko and if ba dapat ko muna icall out ung PT or clear sign na I should change my PT.

TL;DR: hired a PT to get back in shape but not sure if worth it. Clear sign na ba to change your PT? TIA! 😊

@ngwenya In all honesty, you don't need a PT unless you're a high level athlete or have special training considerations.

It's a waste of money (IMO), and anything they can teach you can be learned pretty easily online!

That being said -

Bihira icorrect ung form ko - while may onti idea ako how to do the workouts but form talaga ung iniisip ko because of injuries and hindi ko alam if san ba dapat tumatama ung exercise sa katawan ko

Absolutely correct, form should be your #1 priority. You can google exercises and get a rundown of proper technique, what muscles are activated and suitable alternatives.

Related sa 4, he keeps asking me if I'm sore (dapat daw oo? But most of the time hindi since - ayun nga hindi ko alam if tama ba ung form or hindi lang progressive ung workout ko?)

It's a common broscience misconception - delayed onset muscle soreness or "DOMS" is not actually indicative of training effectiveness.

After the first few weeks, you'll notice you only really get sore after trying out new exercises, or when you return to training after some time off.

Minsan overkill ung sessions namin umaabot ng 2 to 3 hrs (hindi ko alam kung ano ung normal na PT session) for 4 days - minsan ung sched nya kailangan tumugma dun kung saan ung days most of his clients are working out.

Outside of extended cardio sessions, your workout shouldn't really go past 2 hours. You're right that its excessive.

20 mins cardio?

I'm not sure what this is referring to, however 20 minutes of LISS cardio as a general systemic warm-up is common practice by many - or as a way of burning off a few extra calories.

If you're really dead set on having a PT, I agree that some of the methods you've listed are sub-optimal as far as results go.

Though, if you're a newbie, it's likely you'll grow regardless of how effective his training is.

But if your reason for getting a PT is to help with consistency or gym anxiety, then it seems totally fine!

@ngwenya Ganyan na ganyan din experience ko sa PT ko sa AF. Baka same coach tayo lol.

Nung ika 3rd month ko naman, na budol ako mag renew uli ng PT sessions dahil sa limited time discount daw.

Nag doubt ako sa sarili kung kaya ko na ba mag isa. Turned out na I fcking can, na realize ko lng nung nag renovate ung home AF branch ko, kaya napilitan ako mag sariling sikap for a month sa ibang branch.

Ayun bawal irefund or transfer ung PT sessions sa ibang gym member kasi ayun ung pinirmahan sa contract. Charged to experience na lang.

Wag mo na lang i overthink masyado at learn as much as you can from your coach habang may available sessions ka pa. Siyempre samahan mo na rin sariling research mo sa internet, double check mo kung tama ba talaga ung form na pinapagawa sayo or may other alternative exercise na mas na eenjoy mo. Hindi naman lahat ng sasabihin ng PT mo is applicable to you kasi karamihan sa kanila learned from experience at Bro science lang din. Lalong lalo na when it comes to nutrition.

Pag hindi ko kasundo ung ugali ng Coach or di ko gusto ung vibes, baka dun ako napa isip mag papalit ng coach.

@ngwenya Madalas traditional ang mga PT sa Pinas, but changed mine's due to professionalism. If you're not confident with someone whom you hired professionally to continue and push your goals, you are free to change them.

Some examples on why I change my PT (been on and off for 10 years)

May PT ako na madaming sinasabay sa aking clients at the same time, naninigaw to motivate (which hindi ko naman gusto na sigawan ako tapos binabayaran ko pa), traditional yung style and it's not working for me, may iba ding PT, lumalandi, nagpphone etc or taking advantage for more sales.

Always know, its you who is in control of your goals and not your PT, and bagayan din ang PT between client and trainer. Good Luck!
