Has anyone had a silly “lightbulb” moment while exercising?

@m32s So, at my powerlifting gym, we used to put on our powerlifting gear by getting halfway in, waddling onto the gym floor, then having a coach or friend stand on the bench and lift you up by your pants as you squirm and kick your legs and try to get yourself into the suit. It was always...

    Mod Announcement

@acer621 Yo as somebody who subs to both xxfitness and gamedev, I want to encourage this style of approach you've taken. It's a fundamental principle of game design that when you make small incremental changes, it's sometimes hard to tell if you've changed too much or not enough, or if your...

Mark Rippetoe thinks putting women in concentration camps is an "interesting take"

@monicajoy44 I don't know if there's been anything more recent, but years ago he posted this huge 120-point article about how women are different than men, and a lot of it was real insulting. https://jezebel.com/120-hilarious-fitness-tips-for-women-from-a-swole-bro-5985826 Either way don't...

    I can’t do push-ups

@ilovejesuschristourlord I like to do what I call "seal ups". You get in full pushup position, lower yourself to the ground, then with your knees down, girl pushup up, then pick your butt up and do another. It makes the girlpushup feel more like the real thing and allows for more progress.

Very uplifting article I found about female strength training. Belief in yourself and your abilities is so important!!

@iconoclast It's so completely true. I'm a 3 time world champion powerlifter. Because my very first powerlifting competition ever was WABDL world championships. The only 2 women lifting in my weight class in the open were me and an 84 year old woman. I'd give good money there wasn't a single...

How long b/f you could do a pull-up

@ambitiouspoetry A pull up isn't exactly, but is close to, overhead-rowing your entire bodyweight. I weigh 165 lbs, and I got my first pull up within weeks of the first time I bench pressed my bodyweight. To me, they're totally different exercises, but comparable in terms of difficulty. I...

    Calling all multi-sport ladies

@samuelpautu I'm not the best, but I've always had multiple sports going on at one time. And to me, I think it's really important to pick which sport is the most important to me and need to be prioritized. Because if you're trying to make all your sports equally important, what you're going to...

How to respond to the "you look like a man" comments?

@toosmartforyou01 One time, a dude saw me benching and was like "Be careful! You keep doing that, and you're going to look like me!" I said, "I hope! You look AWESOME!" It made his day, and we're pals now.

I can’t even do a wall push. Not even one

@alidvx So you really gotta try as hard as you can to take the shame out of struggling, because there should be no shame at all in struggling to do modified pushups. Even super duper modified ones! Your body is built in such a way that it makes it harder for you than it does for others. I've...

Newbie question: why does 'to failure' feel different for different muscles?

@countrygirl011 I think it's because you're doing a lot of isolation machines. Where the machine kind of forces you to only use one muscle group in a specific way, so the weights involved are lighter, but you use that one muscle in a certain way until you tire it out. But if you're doing a...

    School Fitness/Testing in your country

@heartofberries I think it's important to remember that the study that showed American kids were bad at calisthenics compared to others in the world was done in the 1940's. At the time, it was more common around the world for kids to stand in lines and do synchronized calisthenics as a form of...

Your body is someone else’s goal

@twallacejolly So, I think that might be true for most people, and who knows maybe for me. But like, I'm a person with a body that's not only fat, but bizarre. Truthful or not, I don't think anybody wants to look like me. My body is ugly, and hearing stuff like "Your body is someone else's...

    StrongLifts 5x5 3 days p/w, 5k run 3 days p/w?

@hkr006 Definitely give it a try, but watch how your joints feel. I'm fat and a bad runner, so YMMV, but I found that I had a terrible time trying to run and lift at the same time when I was running on the street or on a treadmill, but I switched to trail running and I'm going an hour a day...

So many women want to lift weights without getting bulky, but how many of us here *do* want to lift weights and get bigger?

@biblicalquality I don't have a goal body. I just want to be as strong as possible, which means getting bigger, which looks like this sometimes. I just want to look like me, and be the most athletic version of myself that I can be. I want to keep my bodyfat levels at a healthy level where fat...
