How do you know when not to do a second crossfit workout in the same day?

A. You feel tired.

B. There is pain in at least one shoulder and one knee

C. You are getting behind in other responsibilities (work, school, family . . .)

D. All of the above.

Ok, I had to write this post so that I can tell myself that it is okay to live to fight another day.

@sadkitty Sometimes, if when I’m gearing up for a local competition, I’ve done my normal CrossFit class and come in later and work on conditioning or a competition WOD.

@truthnotfiction I have a little bit of a perspective on this.

Roughly 5 or 6 years ago I started a program that my Gym was offering as long as there was a group that was interested which was Invictus' Competition training. Ended up being 2 or 3 wods with 2 - 4 accessory sessions per day.

It was great. I loved doing it. Felt fulfilling. Wife hated it. I was at the gym for about 4 hours, after work, so I don't blame her. I was also getting off quite a bit later back then. But I digress.

It was great, I saw huge gains in performance and skills. I was sore, but my body was getting used to the extra volume...... and then my leg gave out mid stride one day while I was out and about, with no warning. I was overtraining the hell out of it without proper recovery. Developed some patellar tendonitis that I still deal with now.

Not trying to discourage you from upping your training. But IF you are going to do more than one workout per day, increase your focus on recovery as well. Recovery is going to be the most important piece and if you can't recover harder, then you probably shouldnt go harder / do more. That's the main thing to consider.

EDIT: Wanted to clarify that I did about 8 months of the extra program before my injury showed up.

@bulfrek Going to echo this, similar but not 4 hours crossfit my ideal day was a half marathon or long cycle etc (you get the gist) then a crossfit session in same day, my body played with me for about 4-6 months i'd say and i loved it (can be very addictive), but my relationships/life did not and then tore my calf i kept going but only one session a day till it was grade 3.

I'm same as you I want to up my volume but go slowly! whatever you do in a week now throw an extra session in (and mind if you are doing doubles you cant go all out everytime)

@truthnotfiction I don’t.

I’m a 36 year-old financial analyst. I’m not an elite competitive athlete. I’ve had way too many injuries (torn pec, torn ACL, two torn menisci and other general aches and pains) from training too much for little benefit.

I’m strong, I’m fit, I’m usually the only guy in my mid-30s that I know outside of my gym that has a six pack, so I think I am doing very well with what I’m doing.

And if I do end up doing a second workout, it’s either gonna be just a strength session by itself (like a squat session,) or echo bike work. I would never do a full second “CrossFit” workout.

@truthnotfiction Whenever I feel I am not working out enough, I try to up the intensity of the time that I actually spend. Its time you're sacrificing from something else so it better be worth it. Everyone needs to find that balance.. just my take..
