@damj I was top 10% last year and barely got into the top 50% on this workout, and I’m about the same height and weight as you. You did just fine, it just wasn’t a good workout for us, and I hope they give us tall athletes a more favorable workout in the next couple of weeks!
@damj It’s your height. Do a simple power calc between what you had to do in 24.1 vs. someone even 4” shorter with the same theoretical time - just in the snatches. You’ll feel better. And when rowing is part of the WOD you’ll crush it.
@sarahcollins Power= Work/delta t: Work is an even simpler calculation W=force x distance. Taking time out of the equation you can see how much more work someone taller, with longer arms, will have to do.
@chrisss7 This is a very good point! I would like to add that a bigger person might also have a bigger "engine" (power output capacity), which might decrease the difference a bit
@sarahcollins there's an actual study done based on crossfit scores about this but I'm on mobile and can't find the link. Basically every inch of height makes burpees 4% harder
@antjewelry Wife finished, I did not. Halfway through she stopped went over to her Stanley got a few sips and chilled for a few then got back to it. Again she finished and I did not…
@damj You still have 2 weeks to improve. You aren’t out of it yet. You can technically make quarter finals and never have a finish inside the top 25%. Ticket is just being consistent. This workout this week was all about engine. In a workout that you have to do muscle ups or lift heavy you may find you have a top 20% finish or top 10% finish. For me I was trying to get top 20% on 24.1 and got 76th percentile. But I’m a pretty strong guy so usually if there’s a lift or complex I can get a top 10 or 5 percent in it and recover from a bad workout. Keep your head up and keep pushing! You also have to remember that everyone else has been training hard trying to make that cut off too. Just gotta keep putting your best foot forward and getting after it.
@damj 24.1 was approachable but also important to consider that it was a specialist workout. It favored shorter and lighter athletes as it was essentially 90 burpee over dumbbell for time. If you’ve been doing CrossFit for even a few years consistently, the 50/35 dumbbell was a 20-30 second rest at best from the burpees.
We will see a heavier barbell and some higher skill stuff in the next 2 weeks that will tip the balance back towards the middle as we always do.
@damj It’s a workout that’s gonna be a test of how much you’re willing to hurt and how well you can resist stopping when it hurts.
That’s always a stumbling block for me and watching it back now I took a full 30seconds rest between the round of 21’s and the round of 15’s - that’s the stuff you just can’t do if you want a good score.
But given I did it on a Monday morning having run a hyrox on Saturday and having spent all day Sunday judging at said Hyrox - I’m happy enough just to have finished it (13:52 I think I was).
It is another good argument for why a three week open sucks though.
@damj I didn’t do as well as I wanted to, and I’m a shorter athlete! Hang in there, it’s one workout. You still have 2 left to make up some ground. ETA: I would add that I’ve done quite a few comps and I’ve learned with this sport you HAVE to keep your head up when you get one bad workout. I’ve had situations where I would have ended up in a better spot because I would have pushed harder if I thought I still had a chance (which I did, and you do too!)
@damj Only 3 people in my gym finished and I was one of the 3. The other 2 are very light and strong athletes whereas I am a large dude who could easily lose 20lbs and still be at the high end of a "healthy" weight for a 6' tall dude. I was over the moon that I finished as well as I did, then I put my score in and I'm like 65% for my age group. Thanks reality!
@damj I'm only 8 months in since I started CF, 44 yr old male, 225lbs. I tried to Rx it, made it through the round of 15s just barely but am glad I gave it a shot.
@damj Yes! I finished in the 61st percentile last year and I also had aspirations to make that 75% cut off. I’ve seen significant improvements this past year in all areas, but burpees have never been a strong suit for me and 24.1 was a burpee workout. I finished at 11:34 which yielded a 66th percentile. I’m a 5’9” 200lbs male for reference. Definitely felt disappointed with that result, but I’m hoping for more skilled workouts to come that I can capitalize on.
