/r/bodyweightfitness will be going dark starting June 12th in protest against Reddit's API changes

@alicejones Oh, get lost. What a brainless answer one can spout in response to anything evil a company does. You are aware that large companies have undue influence over the conditions of people's lives... aren't you..? Do you read?

"Nestle covered up the harm their babyfood did to babies--for profit."

"Weeeeeellllllll, it is... a private... companeeeeeee...."

@alicejones The third party apps that access the API are things like Reddit clients that people use and love every day; many of these have features and functions that just don't exist in the official app, and offer clean, functional experiences. The official Reddit app is awful for someone who just wants to read Reddit, and is almost impossible to moderate on. Additionally it will kill off any bots that operate on Reddit, which make community management or moderation difficult--you'll see a big increase in spam and NSFW content slipping through.

As far as I know, Reddit has not offered a path forward to address ANY concerns people have had, both with app functionality and tools.

@alicejones In addition to spam management, 3rd party apps are critical for users with disabilities. This is from /r/CerebralPalsy:

For many of us in the disabled community, 3rd party apps have become an essential lifeline. They bridge the accessibility gap and enable us to engage fully with the Reddit platform. These apps offer features like voice control, gesture-based navigation, customizable interfaces, and improved readability, which greatly enhance our browsing experience. Additionally, they provide compatibility with screen readers, alternative input methods, and various assistive technologies that are crucial for those with disabilities. By utilizing these apps, we can actively participate in discussions, share our experiences, and find support within the wider Reddit community.

@alicejones It's reddits API. Lots of third party apps use it.

Do you only use reddit on your computer? Do you only use the new/default reddit?

No, reddit will likely not bring a lot of third party functionality in house because they're not interested in spending money to make the site better. They're interested in making the site more profitable. So their focus will be selling more ads.
