@alicejones The third party apps that access the API are things like Reddit clients that people use and love every day; many of these have features and functions that just don't exist in the official app, and offer clean, functional experiences. The official Reddit app is awful for someone who just wants to read Reddit, and is almost impossible to moderate on. Additionally it will kill off any bots that operate on Reddit, which make community management or moderation difficult--you'll see a big increase in spam and NSFW content slipping through.

As far as I know, Reddit has not offered a path forward to address ANY concerns people have had, both with app functionality and tools.

Do you only use reddit on your computer? Do you only use the new/default reddit?

No, reddit will likely not bring a lot of third party functionality in house because they're not interested in spending money to make the site better. They're interested in making the site more profitable. So their focus will be selling more ads.
