I hate lifting

@servantj Why do you want to put on muscle? For health, to attract women, or something else?

I consider myself a cyclist above all else, and I lift mainly to maintain bone density. As you probably know, you need to do something weight-bearing or your bone density will decrease as you age. The good news is that you don't need to do a ton of lifting for general health. You could get away with something like 30 minutes 3 days per week if you use your time efficiently and don't sit there on your phone.

If you're trying to attract women, you're barking up the wrong tree.

@servantj I want to join a group class for lifting. That would be way more fun for me. Les Mills pump is a class for lifting but I’m sure there are others. Or possibly CrossFit. If you have access to a class, you should try it—you might love it.

Don’t hesitate to join even if you are not the same (age, gender, whatever) as everyone else in the class. They’re all paying (or getting paid) to be there and they should welcome you! Or fuck them if they don’t welcome you, there’s other classes out there.

Edited for typos

@servantj Yeah, only doing cardio is just gonna make you look like a wet noodle. If you actively WANT to look muscular, you need to work in strength training.

I've always loved cardio too. I need to work up a hardcore sweat for a minimum of an hour a day, otherwise my depression and anxiety start to spiral. (I'm like a Border Collie. If I'm not run adequately on a daily basis I become destructive and will probably destroy your living room out of spite.)

I was running half marathons on a near daily basis and reaching 80 mpw before I got injured recently. Now I am going out of my goddamned mind. However, I have found a good outlet in dumbbell HIIT and kickboxing workouts (which I turn into dumbbell HIIT with 5 and 8 pound weights).

I was never a biggest fan of strength training either. I think a good way to get started, as a cardio junkie, is to work strength training, bodyweight fitness and dumbbells into your cardio workouts. I've found that it made me want to improve my strength and musculature and I started craving more strength training workouts.

I'm sure you also must know that strength training is important to be a better, stronger, faster runner or cyclist. Just like other sports have to train cardio and do running drills to be better at their sport, we need to incorporate strength training to be better/faster/stronger at our sport.

Also think about the overtraining injuries and biomechanical issues common in running and cycling. Start with strength training (e.g. core and back) that would help you prevent these types of injuries.

That might get the ball rolling for you in strength training and lead you to actually liking it instead of dreading it.

@servantj You don't have defined goals; "Brad Pitt in Fight Club" was accomplished through genetics and cigarettes and almost certainly a weight cut.

https://web.archive.org/web/2024050.../fitness/a41210968/brad-pitt-fight-club-body/

Brad Pitt in Troy was accomplished by quitting cigarettes and hitting the weights.

Saying "I want to look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club" isn't a goal, any more than saying "I want to look like Chris Hemsworth in Thor" is.

You need goals for yourself.
* "My target weight is ___"
* "I want a body fat % of _
"
* "I want to gain __
___ kg of lean muscle mass."
* "My performance goals are ______ and ___"
* "My body measurement goals are _
____"

@alisha45 Sir it was just example of "type of body" i would like to have... not my goal the brad pitt was the easiest example that i could find of natural lazy muscle guy body that do some training and dont give a 2 more cents about it /;

i know i dont have specific goals, and dont have strong why,

thaths why im slacking off probably :)

@servantj I've gone the same. When I was fat I used to like lifting weights but hate cardio. I'm very slim now, and I learned to love running, and discovered when I tried to go back into lifting weights that it sucks now. I get fatigued after 15 minutes lifting, but I can run hard for half an hour and feel great. I think lifting has a much more fatiguing impact on your CNS, and I've also lost a lot of lean mass through losing weight. I do intend to give it another shot, it just feels like such a massive chore, and because I can't do both running and lifting in the same gym visit I have to sacrifice the treadmill run that I love to lift, and I sometimes just say "f**k it, I want to have fun" and go for a tun instead!

@servantj Things like climbing or ballet (or other kinds of dancing) tend to give you lean muscles too. In general I find it easier to get motivated for something that's a skill in itself, rather than exercising for the sake of a certain look. So if it's engaging on its own it might be more fun than lifting weights.

@servantj I grew up as a distance runner. Hate going to the gym. Eventually I blew out one of my achilles tendons. Can’t really run anymore (I still do a little, but low mileage, slow and lots of recovery)

Took me a long time to get back into exercising when I couldn’t run.

I’ve got a bit of a weird suggestion for you; stone lifting.You can go on a hike and try to find stones to lift. It’s outside. You don’t need a lot of equipment.

I mostly do sandbag lifting in my backyard. I don’t have to get a gym membership. The resistance does actually build muscle. I dunno, eventually I just kinda came to enjoy it in a way that I never did with gym work. Mostly just heavy sandbags to shoulder, thrusters, and loaded carries.

I’m sure it’s not for everybody and if I never hurt my ankle, I’d probably still be doing high mileage running, but I did and this is a weird thing that I found and it actually works pretty well for me.

The other thing I would mention is get yourself a heavy bag for boxing. Throwing a tone of punches is cardio, but it’ll get your shoulders, arms and core jacked.

@knumom You sre a genious! Ive heard about some guys getting muscle while hiking cause the were wearing big ass backpacks with all that stuff!

Its exelent example of a thing i want! Woah, never think about that, also in ancient Rome the jse some stones too!

They would hold two stones and train running and distance jumping so when they were competeing, and ditch the stones on side they had greater results!

The sandbag thing is amazin, need to stuff my backpack an do some climb walking 🙈 hahahaha

Very very very good advice!!!!
